Soap and Water Are All You Need
Most types of steel doors do not require special cleaning products, nor are they sensitive to contact with water. All you need is a mixture of water and dish soap. Use a soft brush with a telescoping handle to scrub the door surface and a garden hose to rinse it off. Avoid damage to your landscaping by using plant-friendly dish soap.
Avoid Using Pressure Washers
Pressure washers can damage many types of finishes, which is why roofers and door providers recommend against using them, even at the lowest settings. If you need to remove stubborn stains on your steel door, use a solution of 50% water and 50% white vinegar. Dab it on the stain, leave for a few minutes, then gently scrub using a sponge or soft cloth.
Keep an Eye out for Damage to the Finish
Steel doors are protected from corrosion by factory applied coatings or finishes. Sometimes, outdoor conditions can damage them. Chipped or dinged coatings can introduce moisture and oxygen into the steel layer, which can lead to corrosion. Check the entry door surface for cracks, scratches and blisters as you clean it. Inspect the door glass for cracks and condensation between glass panels. Should you find any of these issues, call your door contractor for repairs.
Replace the Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is the material that lines the bottom of the door frame. Typically made of rubber, it seals the gap between sash and frame and prevents drafts and air leaks. If the old weatherstripping has cracks in it, you should have it replaced. Replacement weatherstripping can be easily purchased at most hardware stores.
